We are the Kaitiaki / Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation. We are proud of our Te Whāinga / Our purpose: Sustainable investment delivering strong returns for all New Zealanders. We invest government contributions to the NZ Super Fund, a global investment fund helping to ensure the country can pay for the growing cost of universal superannuation (New Zealand Superannuation) in the future. We also oversee the Elevate Fund, which invests in small, fast-growing New Zealand companies.

The Role

Reporting to the Director, Sustainable Investment, you will play a senior role in integrating sustainable investment considerations across the Fund’s investment activities and asset classes.

This is a highly collaborative role, working across the wider investment function to build strong relationships, connect SI expertise with investment decision-making, and translate strategic priorities into practical implementation.

You will also drive several of the team’s key strategic initiatives, bringing together investment perspectives, sustainability expertise. Data analysis, communication and implementation. As a senior member of the team, you will mentor and support colleagues, share expertise and help build capability across the Sustainable Investment function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the integration of sustainable investment considerations across asset classes, partnering with investment teams to embed them into investment analysis, due diligence, manager assessment and ongoing portfolio management
  • Lead and contribute across the Sustainable Investment team’s full programme of work, including core business-as-usual responsibilities, strategic initiatives and emerging priorities
  • Lead and support sustainable investment due diligence on transactions and investment opportunities, bringing sound commercial judgement and an understanding of sustainability risks and opportunities
  • Build and manage key relationships across the investment function, acting as a trusted adviser and connecting Sustainable Investment expertise with investment decision-making
  • Provide clear, decision-useful advice and analysis to senior stakeholders and governance forums on material sustainable investment matters 
  • Represent the Guardians in relevant external relationships and collaborative initiatives, including the Crown Financial Institutions responsible investment work 
  • Mentor and support colleagues, share expertise and help build capability across the Sustainable Investment function

Desired Skills & Experience 

  • Substantial experience in sustainable investment, responsible investment or a related investment discipline 

  • Strong understanding of institutional investment and investment decision-making, with experience working across multiple asset classes 

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate sustainability considerations into investment analysis, due diligence and portfolio decision-making 

  • Strong commercial and investment judgement, with the ability to assess sustainability issues through a risk, return and portfolio lens 

  • Proven ability to build trusted relationships and influence senior stakeholders, particularly investment professionals and decision-makers 

  • Ability to work across a broad and varied portfolio of responsibilities, balancing strategic priorities, investment activity and core Sustainable Investment responsibilities 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with the ability to synthesise complex issues and provide clear, decision-useful advice 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including confidence communicating with senior internal and external stakeholders 

  • Collegial and collaborative approach, with a willingness to share expertise, mentor colleagues and build capability across the team

  • Knowledge of Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori would be beneficial
